Q: Can your panel offer any advice on the best way of handling used examples of self-adhesive stamps? I have tried soaking them off their backing paper, but with very mixed results.

A: While some self-adhesive stamps (e.g. Australia and USA) have an adhesive that is theoretically water soluble, others (France and Germany) remain stuck fast no matter how hot the water is. Our general advice is to play safe and make no attempt to soak them at all. Trim used stamps neatly, as close to the edge without cutting into it, of course, and hinge them by the backing paper to the album page. Apart from stamps issued in self-adhesive coins, booklets and panes, these remarks apply to the vending machine labels of many countries, as well as a wide range of airmail stickers and special service labels.
