What's it worth to you?
Funny how your partner took no interest in stamps before: now they want half your collection.
You've always managed on your own, you say. Tell me how that reduces the chances of your stamps being stolen or lost in a fire. Such things happen. Incredibly, less than 5% of stamp collections are insured. Privacy explains part of that; collectors don't want their prized possessions known to all and sundry. Fear accounts for the rest: what will it cost? - yet most households have contents insurance.
Even if you have insured the collection, without an independent valuation, your estimate is no more than a biased opinion. The view I take is, if you don't have house contents insurance, why would you have your stamps insured? However if you do have contents insurance, then you must seriously consider insuring your stamp collection which is hopefully an appreciating asset.
You admit that I've got a point, but how much does in cost? We don't charge a percentage of the value (no false exaggeration there, then). We don't charge an hourly rate (oh, this all takes an awfully long time!)
At Buchanan Street Stamps and pennyred I charge per album, or bundle of goods that approxiamate to an album. I charge a modest fee per album. (There is no fairer way of charging for a valuation.)
